The Journey of the Ojibwe Spirit Horse

Darcy Whitecrow grew up with Ojibwe Spirit Horses in Seine River First Nation, Ontario. His book, Runs with the Stars, tells the story of a child who has a special relationship with the horses and learns about them from their grandfather, just as Darcy did.

Darcy is one of the knowledge holders and artists featured in The Journey of the Ojibwe Spirit Horse, a gift from The Ojibwe Horse Society for free educational use.

This season marks the 50th anniversary of the “Heist Across the Ice,” when the last horses of the breed were rescued. These small horses lived closely with First Nations and were known as helpers to all Nations. They gradually disappeared as machinery and larger European breeds took their place.

But they were not forgotten. Indigenous and non-Indigenous people are working together to protect the breed and carry its living history forward.

We’re honoured to feature some of the knowledge holders and artists whose lives and work are closely connected to the horses.

Jodi Contin recalls hearing about an Ojibwe Spirit Horse who was close to her grandfather, a chief of their village. She is a central performer in The Spirit Horse Returns, sharing her teachings, songs, and true stories of the “small ponies of the deep woods.”

Rhonda Snow was captivated by stories of the horses at an early age and went on to help bring the Ojibwe Spirit Horses back from near-extinction. Rare Breeds Canada recognized her contributions with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
